Backbends are powerful poses. They awaken vitality and support a healthy spine, which is considered in yoga to be the “fountain of youth.” When practised well, these poses improve posture, breath and circulation, while building the confidence to show up with a full, open heart.
Yet for many students, backbends feel difficult or uncomfortable. Often, it’s not a lack of flexibility, but a lack of understanding and preparation.
This workshop offers the time and guidance needed to experience backbends like never before. Over two hours, we’ll work progressively using the Iyengar method to create space and lift in the body through precise alignment and the intelligent use of props such as chairs, bolsters and the wall. Through this approach, you’ll learn how to support the spine intelligently so backbends feel spacious, stable and nourishing. The focus is not on how deep you go, but on how clearly and confidently you practise.
From this workshop, you can expect to:
- understand how to backbend without compressing the lower back, shoulders and neck
- improve spinal health and awareness of your posture
- build confidence in poses that once felt intimidating
- experience the revitalising, mood-lifting effects of true backbends
- leave with practical insights you can apply in your regular classes and home practice
Energetically, backbends are deeply revitalising in Iyengar yoga. They awaken prana and cultivate clarity, courage and emotional resilience. They teach us how to stay present and open in intensity, without collapsing or hardening.
This workshop is suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners alike.
The class will be kept small (max 12 students) to allow for individual guidance and hands-on adjustments throughout.
Please bring your yoga mat, water bottle, and dress in comfortable yoga wear.
